Shit is about to get real, son.
Enjoy the ep! TL notes (that stands for ‘Tanabata Lore’, fyi) after the jump.
This episode deals with the exciting festival of Tanabata. The basics of which are covered pretty well in the episode, but it’s basically an excuse to make wishes and have a decent excuse to believe they will come true. I was debating whether to translate the Tanabata ‘bamboo’ as ‘tree’, as like a Christmas tree seems like it’d be a nice grounding thing that’s more familiar to people, but I figured that’d be a localization too far.
Anyway, the story behind Tanabata deals with the lovers Orihime and Hikoboshi – who are human embodiments of the stars Vega and Altair – who once a year get to cross the Milky Way to be reunited with each other for one night, the night of Tanabata, when wishes come true! Japan really likes this mythos, and you can see a lot of things that use Vega and Altair as pairs in Japanese culture. As such, we went with Vega and Altair in the main subtrack, and left them untranslated as Orihime and Hikoboshi in the secondary, more weeaboo, sub track.
I think that’s about it, by which I mean it’s been so long I can’t remember if there’s anything else. Get owned? V:
