Kamen Rider OOO – 04 Released

"I understand what you're saying, Ankh! But Cazali is crying!"

Lobster did want to superimpose Cazali’s head onto a picture of Cagalli and make the joke fully but it didn’t really work out from a graphical perspective. Actually, the funny story is I did push for the spelling “Cazalli” but Heat wasn’t having any of it. I barely managed to squeeze Cazali out of him by process of “using it in the script and no-one actively changed it”. Which is a victory for making bad references.

If you like that kind of thing, I guess. Anyway, have an ep 4! Hey, a Tuesday release. Not bad, eh?

    • When things are written in katakana it’s generally the better idea to romanize to something more natural to the western-speaking palette, as katakana is innately designed as an alphabet for westernized words and concepts. Katakana is the reason it’s “Ankh” and not “Anku”, etc.

Ks, when used in that way, are unwieldy in English and ‘ri’ tends to carry conotations of a harder ‘i’ than the one used in the Japanese alphabet. That and ‘Cazali’ just sounds better, IMO. With katakana they’re basically saying “Hey, go on, romanize this however the fuck you want.” I mean, if we used the literal transcription ‘Kazari’, where do we stop? The aforementioned ‘Anku’? ‘Mezuuru’? ‘Oozu’? :V

tl;dr Japanese has a way of telling translators to go nuts and they used it for the Gree(e)d.

      • The way I see it, “Anku” as “Ankh” has some logical basis though, as an ankh is, y’know, an actual thing. Villain names are generally always written in katakana from what I’ve seen simply because they’re monsters or aliens or otherwise not Japanese with names written in nice Kanji. Doesn’t mean the romanized spelling’s any different. I tend to think that if it doesn’t make some obvious or subtle pun if you romanize it a certain way, it’s not meant to be that and is better off just left as-is. And we’re already putting way more thought into this than the creative staff ever did. XP

Well how would you do Mezuuru then? Mezul? Maser?
Actually Maser kinda works. Shut up.
Point is, while I agree some names are kind of unwieldy in Japanese, maybe that’s just because they’re meant to be alien or monsterish or whatever, and making them wieldy again undermines that.
But most of all I just don’t like the way Cazali looks, sounds, or tastes. XP

  1. Heh. Actually, when I saw Cazali in the subs, I was wondering where I had heard a similar name before. So you kind of succeeded anyway with the reference, despite it not fully making into the subs.
